We're happy to annouce that we have created a specialist compliance division to help companies amid a crackdown by HM Revenue & Customs on tax matters. Partner Paul Brown has been appointed head of the new tax compliance team. Mr Brown, who trained as a tax inspector at HMRC before moving into practice, continues in his other role as HURST’s head of international tax.

The new team will advise businesses as HMRC toughens its stance on tax avoidance and evasion under pressure from the public and politicians. The team will also help ensure companies meet their obligations under the government’s planned Making Tax Digital initiative, which is due to be introduced from 2019.

Mr Brown said: “The compliance landscape is changing, with a greater focus by the government and HMRC. “HMRC is becoming more active, is getting access to increasingly large amounts of data about companies’ tax affairs, and is becoming more sophisticated in how this is used.

“Making Tax Digital will be part of this process, with a greater focus on real-time reporting for tax purposes. “We want to ensure we have the most robust offering possible to minimise the compliance risk to our clients. “It’s critical they are not left exposed by the new and more aggressive approach from HMRC, which is stepping up inquiries into all aspects of tax affairs and requesting more detail, and its inspectors are making unannounced visits.“At the same time, we want to maximise any opportunities for clients from the compliance process, making sure they claim everything to which they are legally entitled.

“Our new specialist team will ensure we remain on the front foot and ahead of the curve in the new compliance environment. “As HMRC’s approach changes, we need to respond by anticipating their next move and educating our clients so they understand what is going to be required of them and can make the necessary adjustments to their processes to meet their new obligations.”

HURST partner and head of tax Rachel Murphy, said: “Our new dedicated tax compliance team will improve our service to clients and will set us apart from our rivals. “Paul is the ideal person to lead the new team. He has experience of working as a tax inspector with HMRC, understands the changing landscape and possesses a strong desire to ensure clients receive the most robust compliance service possible.”

**All of our clients will be receiving a letter from HURST Tax with further details of this change and of any changes this may represent for them**
